ResumoSpace weather effects on the Earth and near-Earth assets are now of large interest from several economic sectors that depend on the space weather, which motivated studies on the economic impacts and risk assessment. As a result, there still is a growing demand for global indices to represent the impact of the solar-terrestrial interaction (external effects of the space weather) as well as the extreme variation of the near-Earth environment (internal effects of the space weather). Inside this last category is the Earth's magnetic field, which started to be studied with the help of the worldwide used geomagnetic threehourly Kp index that was introduced by Julius Bartels in 1949. It was originally developed to measure solar particle radiation by its magnetic effects. Today Kp is an important measure for the energy input from the solar wind to Earth and it is used by space weather services in near real-time. Nevertheless, despite its global importance, there are regional effects that have been observed that require refining (or different accuracy) on the measurements. Accordingly, the Brazilian Study and Monitoring of Space Weather (Embrace) developed the Embrace Magnetometer Network (Embrace MagNet) to cover most of the eastern South American longitudinal sector. This network fills the gap in magnetic measurements available online in this sector and aims to provide magnetic data to be used as an estimate of the regional disturbance level caused by the geomagnetic storms driven by the space weather effects, for example, by developing the South American K (Ksa) index. In the present work, we present and discuss results from studies recently published and under preparation related to the development of magnetic space weather scales from the sensor network to indices.
